FAQ’s - Dermal filler

  • Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like injectable substances commonly used to fill in wrinkles and fine lines on the face due to the ageing process. At Elsa Aesthetics Newcastle, we specialise in creating beautiful, feminine high cheek bones or soft hydrated lips. Our goal always is to create natural-looking results that you’ve always dreamed of.

  • As with all medications and procedures, they carry side effects and risks. The most common side effects of dermal filler occur within 24 hours or immediately post-treatment. These include swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness.

Immediate side effects usually disappear within days. However, depending on the type of dermal filler used, it can take a few weeks. At Elsa, we strongly encourage a review appointment which is complimentary 4 weeks post-treatment to discuss your treatment results.

  • Aftercare is very important with dermal filler treatment. At Elsa, we suggest the following instructions to our clients.

    - Remain upright for 4 hours following treatment - avoid lying down while the product settles into place.

    - Avoid any skin treatments like microdermabrasion, skin needling, or dermal rolling for 2 weeks after dermal fillers

    - Avoid active skincare products such as Retinol for at least 5 days after the treatment.

    - Avoid alcohol and painkillers such as ibuprofen before and after treatment as they tend to thin the blood and can make you prone to bruising.

    - Do not exercise for 24 hours after your treatment and avoid any exercise that involves inverted poses (e.g. yoga, pilates, barre, etc) and provoke sweating as the dermal filler is settling into place.

    - Avoid exposing your skin to excessive heat or cold including saunas, spas, steam rooms, hot yoga, ice baths, or skiing. Changes in temperature can lead you to touch or rub your face more which can put unwanted pressure on the treated muscles, risking dispersion of the protein into unwanted areas.

    - Avoid massaging or applying pressure to the face which can affect how the product settles in a particular area. When cleansing the skin and applying skincare and makeup, only use gentle strokes.

  • Pain is a personal and subjective experience - however, most clients agree that dermal fillers feel like a slight pinch, with pressure or a ‘stinging’ sensation as the product is being injected. In the end, it depends on your tolerance and on the area being treated. We do our best to make you comfortable during treatment by using numbing cream and taking breaks as needed.

  • At Elsa Aesthetics, we encourage our clients to avoid overseas treat for 2 weeks post dermal filler treatment. Prolonged cabin air pressure can cause unpredictable swelling and bruising.

  • Yes, you can eat and drink as normal after receiving dermal lip filler. It may feel a little strange at first as there may be some swelling present and there is also lidocaine inside the dermal lip filler which can take time to wear off.

Ideally, for the first 24 hours you would avoid eating foods that require excessive chewing so it gives the product time to settle.

  • Longevity of filler is dependant on the choice or brand of filler used and how quickly your bodies metabolism.

The dermal filler brands we utilise at Elsa Aesthetics will typically last from 6-18 months.

  • The short answer is, yes - probably.

Bruising is considered one of the most common side effects of dermal filler injections.

Beneath the skin on your face there is a complex vascular system that looks like a busy, multi-layered highway. It is teaming with lots of little blood vessels, so when we puncture the skin with a needle, it breaks them, causing bruising and/or bleeding.

Typically, if you do bruise, it should go away after 3-5 days, but it can take up to 2 weeks to completely heal.

If you have an event fast approaching, we always recommend to our Elsa Aesthetics clients to allow 1 month for all bruising and swelling to go down to be on the safe side.

FAQ’s - Anti-wrinkle

  • Anti-wrinkle injections are a form of medication that temporarily weakens or paralyzes muscles by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. It can be commonly referred to as ‘botox’.

It is commonly used to reduce and prevent the signs of ageing (fine lines) in the upper face and around the eyes and give your complexion a fresh, youthful look.

A doctor or registered nurse administers the medication into your skin barrier. Within a few days, your muscles will relax and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles will slip away.

It is a very effective treatment and one of our most popular services at Elsa. Results typically last approximately 3-6 months.

  • It is recommended to repeat the treatment before the muscle movements return to normal which is typically 3-4 months. This way there is an overlap in results and a continued softening effect.

  • To determine the correct dosage, we advise you to book in for a complimentary consultation to discuss your goals and concerns

  • For legal reasons, we are unable to publish the brand names of prescription medicines such as anti-wrinkle and dermal fillers. At your complimentary consultation, your Cosmetic injector can freely talk about which market-leading brand is suitable for you.

  • Yes. Anti-wrinkle injections influence the movement of the facial muscles and reduce the contractions to prevent future lines from forming earlier than they might naturally. It is one of the most effective anti-ageing treatments that we offer at Elsa

  • There is very limited research or solid data available that demonstrates that it is safe or unsafe to have anti-wrinkle treatments whilst pregnant and breastfeeding.

However, at Elsa we prefer to err on the side of caution and recommend that you don’t have these treatments whilst your pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Item description
  • Chemical peels can be formulated with many different resurfacing ingredients, but broadly speaking they are designed to revitalise texture by causing the skin to shed cells, promoting firmness and fewer fine lines.

This shedding reveals fresh, bright skin and indirectly stimulates collagen production in the dermis. Chemical peels are a great option for those wanting to improve skin texture and fine lines, address acne and congested pores, and reduce sun damage and pigmentation.

  • Generally those who suffer from acne, congestion, blackheads, sun damage and fine lines will benefit from peels.

In terms of acne, the lactic acid removes the top layer and salicylic acid (BHA) penetrates the follicles to help unblock pores, reduce inflamed skin and remove trapped oil and dead cells.

For those suffering from surface pigmentation and sunspots, AHA’s help to lift surface cells which hold the uneven surface pigmentation.

Clients with fine lines will find that a series of AHA peels will note a reduction in the appearance of fine surface lines, as exfoliation causes the skin to regenerate new cells more efficiently and remove rough surface cells.

  • Unless one strong deeper peel is performed under controlled medical supervision the answer is no.

Best results will be obtained through a series of six to eight fortnightly to monthly peels rather than a one-off treatment. It is recommended to have lighter peels over three months than one aggressive peels that may cause severe damage to the skin.

Many clients commence with low level peels (lactic 20-30%) and gradually increase the peels strength over the series to up to 60% if tolerated. Your skin therapist will advise you on a suitable level for your skin type.

  • Not everyone is suited to chemical peels. Peels should never be performed on those with darker skin tones, particularly those with darker Asian, Middle Eastern and African American and Southern European ethnicity as they are prone to skin pigmentation after damage.

  • Have you ever noticed older skin that has the appearance of candle wax? This may be the result of over peeling. Having too many peels or overly aggressive treatments can irreversibly thin the skin and may even permanently remove our natural protective pigment.

Always err on the side of caution and have peels performed by reputable therapists. Peels are designed to address a skin concern. Once the concern is controlled or desired results are achieved, then the treatment should cease. Maintenance treatment can be performed as needed.

FAQ’s - Skin Needling

  • A medical grade device is rolled over the epidermis in a specific way which causes tiny little micro channels into the skin that stimulate rapid renewal, rejuvenation and regeneration providing long lasting corrective results.

The microscopic puncture channels stimulate circulation and the growth of new collagen and elastin. This assists in re-building the skin’s structure and integrity whilst providing versatile correction of many skin conditions. Skin needling does not use heat and is therefore suitable for treatment on most skin types.

  • Depending on your skin condition, we recommend anywhere between 3-10 treatments. When treating more severe skin conditions such as stretch marks and major scarring you may require between 6 to 10 treatments every 6-8 weeks.

  • After a micro skin needling treatment you must ensure that you avoid any excessive heat to the area such as hot showers, saunas, exercise, sun exposure etc.
The application of a soothing agent post treatment is essential and you must also avoid the use of active cosmeceutical skin care for a few days post treatment.

  • After a micro skin needling treatment it is normal to experience mild to moderate redness, slight swelling, minor flaking, mild grazing and bruising. The more dramatic side effects can last anywhere from 1 to 7 days with improvements each day.

  • One hour prior to treatment a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the area. This will minimise any discomfort during the treatment. Most clients describe the feeling as a bit of pressure and a mild tingling feeling.

  • Skin needling is not only effective at treating certain skin conditions on the face, but also very effective in the treatment of stretch marks and scarring on any part of the body. Skin needling is also safe to perform on areas close to the eyes, such as when treating crows feet and frown lines.

  • Skin needling should not be performed within 2 weeks of having dermal fillers, chemical peels, waxing, depilatory creams, electrolysis, laser or IPL in the area to be treated.

The treatment is also not to be performed on raised moles, warts, or lesions.

Prior to commencing the treatment, please notify your therapist of any allergies you may have to specific ingredients or any medication you may be taking.

FAQ’s - IPL Hair Removal

  • Item description
  • A fully trained clinician will apply a specially designed hand piece to your skin and generate an intense pulse of light which will be absorbed by the hair follicle, disrupting the hair and preventing it from growing back.

The light from the hand piece is delivered at high intensity during a very short period of time. It is this rapid discharge of light that provides the high energy levels required for an effective IPL treatment.

  • Treatments are suitable for a wide range of skin types and hair colours. Your clinician will discuss your expected results during your consultation.

  • This depends on your individual hair type. Most clients require 6-8 sessions to receive optimum results though hair will reduce and become finer with each treatment. For some, maintenance treatments may be required to achieve a lifetime of smooth skin. This will depend on a range of factors which your clinician will discuss during your consultation.

  • Facial hair will take 7-10 days to fall out while body hair may take 2-3 weeks. Individual results will depend on your skin type, hair coarseness and natural growth cycle. Your clinician will be able to provide you more information on what to expect based on your own individual situation during your consultation.

  • The sensation felt during IPL is often described as very warm and like a rubber band flicking against your skin. At Elsa we will work to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment and will guide you through the treatment process from start to finish.

  • The duration of the effects depends on the type of injectable used. Dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the product used and the area treated. Botox typically lasts 3-4 months, while other botulinum toxin products may last longer.
